RBA, Regulators Watching Financial System but Confident of its Resilience

(Sydney, April 9, 2025) – The Reserve Bank of Australia and its local peers are monitoring the Australian financial system closely but remain confident it is strong and resilient.

The Council of Financial Regulators, which includes the RBA, APRA, ASIC and the Treasury, had an unscheduled meeting on Wednesday and, in a departure from past practice, issued a statement on the day itself.

The CFR typically meets every quarter and releases a statement the next morning. This meeting was attended by Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

Following Wednesday’s meeting, the CFR said it expects a period of uncertainty to likely persist for some time. There was no suggestion of panic or need for any form of intervention.

“There has been an increase in global financial market volatility, but the Australian financial system was strong and resilient. Australian banks have maintained strong levels of capital and liquidity,” the statement said.

The statement dashes any hope or need for intervention from the RBA in response to volatility in the financial markets.
